National Institute of Design(NID Course): Design Your Future
An autonomous institution functioning under the guardianship of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, National Institute of Design has a very enticing story behind its making. Being recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, by the government, as a scientific and industrial research organization, NID has broken many mythical boundaries when it comes to finding the links between science and designing. To inculcate such a purpose in the local market, the Government of India invited Charles and Ray Eames who were renowned American designers in those times with the help of the Ford Foundation. After exploring India in-depth, both Charles and Ray presented a report to the government. The comprehensive document called out that the designers all over the Indian peninsular must test and retest all the available opportunities available for growth through experiential learning and a more pragmatic approach towards art education. This worked as the laying foundation of NID.
Ford Foundation and Sarabhai Family acted as the pioneers of NID along with the Government of India and in 1961; NID was born on the soils of Ahmedabad as an autonomous all-India body. Gautam Sarabhai and Geeta Sarabhai, his sister, both played major roles in cementing the principles of young-NID. By introducing the philosophy of the Bauhaus Design Movement that has the core idea of learning by doing, he established an unconventional but correct way of learning the art in NID, an idea that still enlivens the curriculum of the institute to date.
With the above and many other reasons, NID was declared as the ‘Institute of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014. Covering research and education in areas such as Textile, Communication, Industrial, and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design, NID has been widening the ambit of designing in India via pragmatic education.

Admission Procedure
In order to get admission to one of the reputed NIFT establishments, you have to clear their entrance examination which is conducted in a phase-wise manner. Common Criteria
- The minimum age limit to apply for NIFT 2022 is 23 years as of 1st October 2022 for the General category.
- 5 years Age relaxation will be given to SC/ST/PHP candidates.
Course-wise Criteria
- For B.F.Tech (Duration: 4 years)
- The candidate should have passed the secondary or equivalent examination with major subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from any recognized board. A three or four years Diploma recognized by the AICTE or State Board of Technical Education can also apply.
- For B. Des (Duration: 4 years)
- The candidate should have passed the secondary or equivalent examination from any recognized board. A three or four years Diploma recognized by the AICTE or State Board of Technical Education can also apply.

Admission Procedure
For PG courses of NIFT, the exam that you have to give for getting admission is the same as the one that a UG course aspirant will give, following the same procedures. The only difference will be that the paper for M.Des will have a different pattern than the one given by the M.FTech and MFM, even though the syllabus will remain the same. The written exam is followed by situational and GD/PI testing, clearing which you will be ready to fulfill your dream of studying at one of the top Indian designing institutes.
