National Institute of Design (NID) & NID Coaching
National Institute of Design – NID has been acclaimed internationally as the best institution that offers industrial, IT, and communication-related design education. It is a statutory institution under DIPP, Ministry Of Commerce and Industry, Government Of India. This establishment is a result of many forces both global and local. Based on some recommendations, the Government of India in collaboration with the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family established the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
NID was founded as a result of a combination of global and local pressures. These forces collided in the late 1950s, and this was a watershed moment in Indian culture and education. In a newly independent India, this was a period of reflection and restoration. A nascent nation was faced with the enormous challenge of nation-building, which included combining old customs with modern ones. At the same time, the Modern Movement, the Machine Aesthetics theory, and revolutionary experimentation in the arts, architecture, and design were all happening. In all sectors of life, people were looking for their Indian identity.
At the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1955, Pupul Jayaker, a notable writer on Indian craft traditions and the founder of the Indian Handlooms and Handicrafts Export Council (HHEC), met renowned American designer Charles Eames.
The Textiles and Ornamental Arts of India, organized by the Museum, was a one-of-a-kind exhibition. This would be the start of a lifelong venture between these two great minds.
The Government of India, with the help of the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family, founded the National Institute of Industrial Design, as it was initially known, as an autonomous all-India entity in September 1961 at Ahmedabad, based on the suggestions given in the India Report. Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira were instrumental in the founding of NID and its early years. Gautam Sarabhai went against the grain of conventional thought and education. He resurrected the Bauhaus design movement’s learning-by-doing concept. This one-of-a-kind curriculum and revolutionary pedagogical philosophy are still in use at NID today.
It is also recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.
The National Institute of design is currently present in six states across India.
