NIFT is the country’s first fashion institute, founded in 1986, and has been at the forefront of supplying professional human resources to the textile and clothing industries. It was established as a formal institute in 2006 by an Act of the Indian Parliament, with the President of India as its “Visitor,” and it now has full-fledged campuses throughout the country. Over the years, NIFT has also served as a knowledge service provider to the Union and State governments in the areas of handloom and handicraft design development and positioning.
NIFT now operates 17 campuses around the country. The first campus opened at Hauz Khaz, New Delhi, in 1986. In 1995, campuses were established in Chennai, Kolkata, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, followed by the Bengaluru campus in 1997. Bhopal’s campus opened in June 2008, Bhubaneswar’s in 2010, Jodhpur’s in 2010, Kangra in 2009, Kannur’s in 2008 but not permanently until 2012, and Patna’s in 2008. In the last decade, Raebareli, Shillong, Srinagar, and Panchkula were founded.
