Congratulations on reaching the group discussion stage of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) admission process! Group discussions are a crucial aspect of evaluating candidates’ communication skills, teamwork, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. To help you shine during this stage, we’ve compiled a comprehensive guide outlining essential dos and don’ts to ace your NIFT group discussion with confidence and finesse.
Group discussions at NIFT are conducted to assess candidates’ ability to communicate effectively, express their ideas clearly, collaborate with others, and contribute meaningfully to a group conversation. Here’s what you can expect during the group discussion:
Topic Selection: Topics for group discussions may vary and can range from current affairs and societal issues to fashion trends, design innovations, and industry-related topics. Candidates are given a brief time to prepare their thoughts before the discussion begins.
Group Dynamics: Groups typically consist of 8-12 candidates, seated in a circle or semicircle. The discussion is moderated by a panelist who observes participants’ interactions, communication styles, and contributions to the discussion.
Evaluation Criteria: Candidates are evaluated based on various parameters including clarity of thought, articulation, listening skills, relevance of points, persuasiveness, respect for others’ opinions, ability to build on ideas, and overall communication effectiveness.
Active Participation: Engage actively in the discussion by sharing your viewpoints, ideas, and opinions. Contribute meaningfully to the conversation while respecting others’ perspectives.
Clarity and Conciseness: Communicate your thoughts clearly and concisely. Structure your arguments logically and express yourself in a manner that is easy to understand.
Listen Attentively: Practice active listening by paying attention to what others are saying. Acknowledge and build on others’ points, and avoid interrupting or dominating the discussion.
Support with Examples: Back up your arguments with relevant examples, facts, or personal experiences to lend credibility to your points and demonstrate depth of understanding.
Monopolizing the Discussion: Avoid dominating the conversation or speaking excessively. Allow others to voice their opinions and contribute to the discussion.
Being Disrespectful: Maintain a respectful and courteous demeanor towards fellow participants, even if you disagree with their viewpoints. Avoid personal attacks, interruptions, or derogatory language.
Lack of Preparation: Avoid entering the group discussion without adequate preparation. Spend the allotted preparation time wisely to organize your thoughts and plan your contributions effectively.
Going Off Topic: Stay focused on the assigned topic and avoid straying into unrelated discussions or tangents. Keep the conversation relevant and steer it back on track if it veers off course.
